Chesapeake Family Magazine, published by Jefferson Communications in Annapolis, Maryland won nine awards in the Parenting Media Association Design and Editorial Awards Competition at the organization's annual conference in Indianapolis, Ind., April 14-17, 2016.

“I am so proud of my team,” said Donna Jefferson,  CEO of Jefferson Communications. “We work really hard to bring families all the information they need. It's nice to be recognized internationally for our efforts.”

Chesapeake Family won five first place “Gold” awards in both design and editorial.

The 2015-16 Big Book of Health won for overall design and for a feature layout on out-of-the-box lunch ideas for work done by Art Director Jenny Patrick C. A story on Dana Flacco, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s wife and mom of three young boys, won for interior photography. The photos were taken by Dunks Photo.

Two articles by freelance writer Allison Eatough — one about teen heroin use in Maryland in July and another with information and resources about teens cutting themselves in November— won for feature writing.CF September2015 Cover

The magazine also won silver awards for overall design and the design of the story on teens using heroin.

“Color is used to attract, not decorate,” the judges said. “The pages are functional and easy to read. The typography and photography jump off the glossy paper. Listing material is presented well.”

Family Fun articles on a day trip to D.C. by Karen Stysley and fun factories to tour by Kristy MacKaben also won silver and Chesapeake Family’s overall writing earned a bronze award.

“There is lots of useful information in this magazine, ranging from day trips that are fun and educational to a compilation of readers’ favorite physicians,” the judges said regarding the magazine’s writing. “All of it is presented in language that is clear, correct and conversational. That’s a winning mix.”
